School Safety Officer | | GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Newark Central School District School Safety Officer will provide direct supervision to students in unstructured areas most notably the hallways, bathrooms, cafeteria, and bus loop. The School Safety Officer will work in conjunction with school administration, the Director of Security, and all school staff to provide supervision and proactively disrupt behaviors. The School Safety Officer should possess an even temperament, good manners, and the ability to comprehend and carry out the objectives of this position in a way that is supportive of the overall intentions of the school district as well as support the district’s vision, mission, and district and building-wide safety plans. It is essential they possess good judgment and discretion in working with adolescents to minimize conflict and confrontation. Incidental tasks assigned by administrators will occur (e.g. assistance with student searches, assistance with escorting students on pass restriction etc.). JOB DUTIES: - Patrols the school grounds inside and outside, ensures overall safety, checks exterior doors to ensure that they are closed and locked, views videos and security monitors, and watches for strangers or suspicious activity;
- Completes end of the day walkthrough to ensure that students are with a teacher or staff member during the after-school period;
- Ensures compliance with safety standards through work with the Superintendent of Schools and building administration;
- Deescalates physical conflicts and assists all parties to talk through their differences using both TCI and restorative practices;
- Delivers or participates in professional development to District staff relating to safety issues;
- Establishes and maintain positive working relationship with local agencies to ensure the safety, prompt resolution of criminal activities that occur on or near campus;
- May serve as a member of all building safety committees including building and/or district Threat Assessment teams;
- In collaboration with administration, confer with staff, students, parents and community members regarding issues that deal with the security of the school campus
- Reviews security reports and conducts follow-up if corrective action is needed;
- Maintains and enforces the policies and procedures of the School District;
- Maintains/achieves certifications and licensure as required;
- Conduct interviews with students/staff, if necessary, on school property or at school functions abiding by school board policy and applicable laws
- Prevents admittance of unauthorized persons to the premises
- Mentors’ students in specific situations when requested by the principal, or designee
- Present and active in the main foyer of the building welcoming students
- Walk the halls and supervise student bathrooms in concert with hall monitors ensuring that all students arrive to their class
- Provide security within and in the area immediately outside the cafeteria
- Carries out any other assigned duties, which may be deemed appropriate by the Superintendent of Schools/designee.
